2020 Triennial Review and Report
Dear Alpha Brothers:
As I enter my final months of service as the South Carolina district director, I thought it would be a good time to pause and say “thank you” for the amazing support you all have shown and given me.
During the past three-and-a-half years, we have witnessed many achievements, successes of which I’m extremely proud to have been a part. Here are just a few of the highlights:
Improved the South Carolina District’s overall participation in the Fraternity’s national programs and special projects.
Increased attendance at, and participation in, our District conferences as well as the annual College Brothers Summit/District Leadership Retreat.
Increased the number of District corporate partnerships: adding SunTrust Bank (now Truist), American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and Thomas Media Group.
Have grown our relationship with the March of Dimes resulting in increased funding from MOD to the District.
Rolled out two successful District ‘signature’ community service projects – “Alpha Men Do Read” and “Let’s Tie Things Up.”
Have maintained a 90-percent or better compliance rate on all Fraternity mandates, including chapter grand tax; chapter insurance premiums, chapter directory updates.
Initiated the district-level Brother’s Keeper Initiative raising more than $8,000 to assist brothers and their families during their time of need.
Successfully completed six cycles of the Initial Membership Development Process (IMDP) during which more than 200 new brothers became a part of the House of Alpha.
I am also penning this report because many of you have inquired as to what is next for me following my tenure as district director. First, let me say I appreciate of all the encouragement from brothers who have suggested I seek higher office in the Fraternity. I am also humbled by the many offers of support I have received—in time, talent, and treasure—should I decide to seek other leadership positions within our great Fraternity.
After much prayer and thoughtful contemplation, I have decided not to seek any elective office within the Fraternity at this time. However, my focus will remain on providing leadership right here in the District of South Carolina. Remember, I will remain a voting member of the District leadership as the immediate past district director. In this role, I plan to work to ensure that as a District, we are properly positioned at the table of leadership and that SCALPHA brothers’ voices are heard.
We have three outstanding brothers who are seeking to succeed me. They are: W. Franklin Evans; Vince Gatling Jr.; and Jeffrey Hughes. As the “outgoing” district director, I plan to ensure a smooth and seamless transition between my and the next SCALPHA administration.
Lastly, I will continue to work with and enhance the aforementioned community service projects: “Alpha Men Do Read” and “Let’s Tie Things Up” which were initiated under my administration. Given the present state of affairs in South Carolina and across the United States, including the racial justice movement and the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact on Black lives, these service projects are now more important than ever before.
Again, thanks for allowing me to serve you as district director. There is still much more work to be done in Alpha and I remain eager and committed to the tasks now, just as I have each of the 38 years of my uninterrupted service in A Phi A!
